Clovis I (466-511 AD)
United Gaul under Merovingian Dynasty and first Catholic King in Gaul (France). Baptised in Rheims in on Christmas c. 496 by Saint Remigius, Bishop of Reims. After his conversion to Catholicism, many converted from the then prevalent Arian doctrine.
Another artist's rendering of Clovis' baptism.

Charlemagne (742-814 AD)
Crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III in 800 AD, Charlemagne helped to spread literacy through his patronage of monasteries and support of learned men such as Einhard and Alcuin. He united various warring kingdoms throughout modern day France, German and Italy under his rule through strength of physical power and religious reforms.
Cluny Abbey
In 910, William, I, Duke of Aquitaine and count of Auvergne donated his hunting preserve to establish a Benedictine monastery built in the Romanesque style. Unlike most monasteries, Cluny was free from secular obligations and took direction only from the pope. Aside from being very influential, this monastery was also one of the wealthiest and grandest during its time.
The Apocalypse Tapestry
France 1116, 1965
This scene is just one of many from the oldest surviving French medieval tapestry. It was commissioned by the Duke of Anjou, Louis I, a son of  John II, King of France. Woven from 1377 to 1382, the subject deals with the Apocalypse from The Book of Revelations written by John around 70 to 95 AD.
St. Martin of Tours (316-397 AD)
